I can understand it from one point of view. To become a conscious and spiritual person, one must undertake a journey to the inside. It is an inner journey on finding out who you truly are and become brave enough to show your true beauty to the world.
To engage for social issues in the world is an outer journey. To help make the world a better place is without a doubt something needed and important, and it requires your active participation. 

I believe the best comes out of everybody if the person starts to combine the inner and outer way. The more aware you are of yourself, the more aware you are of other people. Yet you don’t loose yourself in doing good for others and helping. You stay strong in who you are. This is so important and unfortunately too often forgotten. We want to help, which is so wonderful, but then we forget about ourselves, don’t take care of us and are surprised why this is exhausting us.
On the other hand as a person following their inner journey, one often forgets about the world outside of his/her circle. Within time one seem to be cold and egoistic to other people, because the person cares so much for the inner development (which is good) but starts to believe others just don’t understand the person or are not aware enough.

It is so important for us to understand that both sides need to be addressed. Maybe it takes some time until we are able to, but once we are able to do so, we become really social change agents. Because we are not just about to change the world, but also ourselves.
